How we work
Compassionate Commissary locations have provided over 600,000 meals to our Ashe County neighbors and beyond with no questions asked. Each box is free for the taking, to keep or share. If you or someone you know needs food, here are the locations of our Compassionate Commissary sites.
We rely on donations and volunteers to feed our neighbors in need. The more you give, the more we give with 100% of every dollar used for one purpose - to bring hope and love to our neighbors. We are so thankful for our devoted volunteers who help us keep our locations stocked.
Local social services agencies, schools with subsidized meal programs and churches are contacted to help spread the word among people in need.
Special consideration is given to underserved children and their families, the elderly, and mentally or physically challenged people, as well as disabled veterans and their families.

The Grateful Warrior
PTSD is a common affliction among U.S veterans. For one Ashe County local, this trauma has been a lifelong struggle. John Longo is a retired 66 year old U.S Air Force veteran who has served in Vietnam and has been stationed in various countries all over the world from Thailand, Japan, & Saudi Arabia to name a few. All this time serving in the military made adjusting to domestic life very challenging for Longo. It brought on a divorce with his first wife and a complicated relationship with his children.
His PTSD has also brought on issues with his 32 year old marriage with his current wife, Becky. Despite the struggles Longo has gone through, he finds healing through his faith in God, his relationship with nature, and his dedication to community service. We are delighted to welcome Longo as a volunteer with Musicians Missions of Mercy and to share his inspiring tale of hope and courage.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE COMPASSIONATE COMMISSARY™ PROGRAM?
Free To Take Boxes
Through this program, our organization provides local convenience stores and general stores with “Free to Take” boxes. These boxes are filled with free food and other essentials for anyone to take as they need. These boxes are also replenished every month.
Emergency Hotline
We’re proud to offer an emergency hotline service for Ashe County residents. Anyone in need of food can call (828) 434-8888 to get a “Box of food that holds 50 meals or more,” no questions asked.
It’s our mission at Musicians Mission of Mercy to ensure underserved populations throughout West Jefferson, Lansing, and Appalachia get the dignity, love, and respect they deserve.
Our distribution drives prioritize children and their families, the mentally and physically challenged, as well as veterans and their families.
